Jupyter kernel dies on Ubuntu
just had the same problem on Ubuntu 14.04
got it solved by upgrading the ipykernel
sudo pip install --upgrade ipykernel
In the end installing Jupyter notebooks gave me so many problems I did a complete re-build AND re-installed Jupyter AND made sure that I had a "clean" Python 2.7 kernel (there were a number of incompatibilities). But with all that done it runs well.
I would recommend that anyone trying to do a Jupyter Notebook install and finding kernel errors looks at the state of both the installed kernels and Jupyter itself. It may not be the only issue that's holding you up, but...
